Renovating an older property can breathe new life into a home that hasn’t been touched for decades. Recently, we completed a full replastering and renovation of a two-bedroom terraced house in Bristol, transforming it into a modern and aesthetically appealing home. Here’s how we achieved it.
Assessing the Property: Over 50 Years Untouched
This property had not been renovated in over 50 years, so it was showing signs of wear and tear. Cracks in the plaster, uneven surfaces, and outdated design elements made it the perfect candidate for a full renovation. The first step was to strip back the old, damaged plaster and remove any outdated materials.
Reboarding and Structural Adjustments
A significant part of this job involved reboarding most of the walls. Many of the existing walls were in poor condition and needed fresh plasterboard to ensure a smooth and durable finish.
We also made structural changes to improve the flow and feel of the home. For example:
Seamless Kitchen Ceiling: In the kitchen, we altered the lines to remove unnecessary walls and notches, creating one seamless line across the ceiling. This gave the kitchen a more open and unified look, perfect for modern living.
Window Bays: The windows were slightly packed out to create a deeper, more aesthetically pleasing bay window, which not only modernized the space but also allowed more natural light to flood the rooms.
Preparing the Surfaces for Painting
Once the replastering was complete, we prepared the newly plastered surfaces for painting and decorating. This step is crucial to achieving a smooth, professional finish:
Drying Time: We allowed the plaster to fully dry, which is important to avoid any bubbling or cracking when the paint is applied.
Sanding: After drying, all surfaces were lightly sanded to ensure smoothness, eliminating any imperfections.
Final Touches: Ready for Modern Living
After the preparation work, the property was handed over to the painting and decorating team. The newly plastered walls and restructured spaces were now ready to be transformed into a modern, stylish home.
The result? A beautifully renovated property, ready for modern living after decades of being untouched.
